Life today is busy and demanding, and whether it’s for work, travel, or emergencies, most of us find ourselves away from home for extended periods. While it’s natural to worry about your family’s well-being when you’re not around, the good news is that there are plenty of practical steps you can take to ensure their safety even in your absence. Here’s how you can safeguard your loved ones when you’re away:

1. Install Robust Security Measures

One of the most effective ways to protect your home and family is by installing security systems that deter intruders and alert authorities when something goes wrong.

Home Security Systems: Invest in a modern home security system that includes door/window sensors, motion detectors, cameras, and alarms. Many systems today are connected to your smartphone, allowing you to monitor your home in real-time and receive alerts if anything suspicious happens.

Smart Doorbells and Cameras: Smart doorbells with cameras allow you to see who’s at your door, even when you’re miles away. Motion-activated security cameras around the property provide extra eyes and act as a deterrent to potential burglars.

Outdoor Lighting: Motion-sensor lights around your home’s exterior are another effective way to keep intruders at bay. Bright lights can startle unwanted visitors and make your home look occupied, even if no one is there.

2. Consider Perimeter Protection with Fencing

As a fencing company in Leicester confirms, fencing plays a crucial role in home security and provides both a physical and psychological barrier between your property and the outside world.

Types of Security Fencing: Choose fencing that suits your needs—wooden fences offer privacy, while metal or chain-link fences can be topped with spikes or barbed wire for added protection. If aesthetics matter, there are modern fence designs that combine beauty with security.

Lockable Gates: Make sure gates are sturdy and come with secure locking mechanisms. For additional safety, consider automated gates controlled remotely or with a keypad.

Visibility and Height: A fence that’s too low can be easily climbed, while one that’s too high might violate local regulations. Find a balance and make sure the area around the fence is well-lit and free from shrubs or trees that could provide cover.

Fencing protects against intruders and keeps children and pets safe within your yard. It adds peace of mind when you’re not home and creates a secure boundary that can be monitored through cameras or motion detectors.

3. Keep Your Home Looking Occupied

One of the easiest ways to deter crime is to make it seem like someone is home.

  • Smart Lighting: Use smart plugs and timers to turn lights and appliances on and off at various times.
  • Hold Mail and Packages: Overflowing mailboxes or packages on the porch are clear signs no one is home. Ask a neighbour to collect them or use a mail-hold service.
  • Lawn Care: If you’ll be gone for an extended period, arrange for someone to mow the lawn or shovel snow, depending on the season.

4. Communicate with Neighbors and Family

Let trusted neighbours know that you’ll be away. Give them your contact information and ask them to keep an eye out for anything unusual. Have a friend or family member drop by the house occasionally if possible. In case of emergencies, it’s also helpful to create a list of important contacts for your family and leave it in an easily accessible place.
