A dentist or dental hygienist can perform an exam to evaluate the condition of your teeth, gums, and mouth. The evaluation may include a consultation, dental cleaning, and an X-ray. Dental exams also involve checking for signs of oral health issues and related medical conditions. Here’s a look at what happens during a dental exam:

Medical History Review

Dental examinations usually involve a medical history review done by your dentist or hygienist. The review involves asking questions about any past or recent health issues, allergies, and medications you take. Medical reviews also include questions about lifestyle factors like smoking, diet, and workplace environments. The objective is to determine underlying conditions and factors that could affect your oral health.

Teeth and Gum Cleaning

Dental cleaning involves using a scaler to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from the surface of your teeth. The hygienist might use an ultrasonic scaler, which uses ultrasound vibration and a fine mist of water to deep-clean your teeth and gums. After scaling, the hygienist polishes your teeth with an electric brush featuring a rubber tip. Polishing uses a special gritty toothpaste. The hygienist then flushes the dislodged deposits before flossing your teeth. Fluoride gel, foam, or dental sealants can also be applied to your teeth.

Dental X-rays

If your dental examination requires X-rays, the hygienist can have them taken before the actual examination. For some visits, the X-rays are handled by your dental nurse or doctor. X-rays are used to check for cavities, bone loss, gum disease, and other underlying issues. The images can reveal issues hidden from visual examinations. Depending on the X-ray technology used, your upper body is covered with a lead apron to block the radiation. You’re also provided with a piece of plastic to bite down on. The X-ray scanner is positioned near your cheek, and a quick scan is performed by the hygienist in the room. Most X-ray scans only require a few seconds.

Gum and Teeth Evaluation

The actual dental exam involves checking on the overall health of your teeth and gums. Dental professionals analyze the X-ray scans and examine your teeth and gums using various tools. They may use a small mirror to inspect individual teeth for cracks, cavities, and other damage. Whoever is performing the examination also checks your bite alignment to see if your top and bottom teeth fit together. Gum evaluation checks for swelling, redness, bleeding, and other signs of gum disease. The depth of your gum pockets is measured to check for periodontal disease. Dental clinics also check for oral cancer signs like unusual lumps in your lips, tongue, mouth, and face.

Post-exam Consultation

The findings of your dental exams are discussed with you, and if necessary, a provided report details all issues and any recommended treatments. Depending on the findings, the dental professional can recommend fillings, crowns, veneers, or clear aligners. The underlying condition might require extensive procedures like implants, root canals, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) treatment. Dental professionals also provide guidance on how to brush, floss, and improve your oral hygiene routine.

Find an Experienced Dentist Today

Regular dental exams may help identify and treat cavities, periodontal disease, and other oral health concerns. An experienced dental clinic can establish a routine that allows you to better prevent issues and manage related conditions. Contact an experienced dentist today to find out more about dental exams and procedures.
